I’ve been looking into online bank accounts lately. I’ve had enough of big local banks. Lousy rates and high fees – why stick with them? It’s time for a change, so I’m going to try something new. I mean after all, it’s my money, and I’m lending it to them. They should pay for the privilege. And why should I have to pay fees to them? It’s not like I get to charge them fees when I borrow money from them. Check out Wilmington Trust Direct for example. Their rates are way higher than anything you can get at the big corporate banks. And banking online is easier than dealing with lines at tellers anyway. I know some people have issues with not being able to meet their bankers in person, but honestly I don’t really care about that. If you’re not earning a good return, you might want to check them out as well.

I’m firing Citibank. They just aren’t a great deal anymore for my money. I’m looking at Washington Mutual instead, and some of the other online banks as well. Much better deals to be had. Sometimes you have to remind yourself that you are lending your money to the bank with these accounts, and they ought to be paying you. It’s not like you get to charge the bank fees when they loan you money, after all. I poked around the net, and settled on ING Direct as the best option out there. They pay great rates, and don’t charge those ridiculous fees. Frankly, I couldn’t care less about meeting a banker in person. I’d much rather do my banking online with a click or two than wait in line at the branch. You might want to look into the benefits of online banking yourself.

Bank of America stinks, just so you know. I’ve been using them for years just because they have ATMs all over town, but now I’m checking out online banking.
